Francesca Crochet Skirt

Hannah Cross of HanJan Crochet built this skirt around her own take on the wedge stitch, angled to give that lovely diagonal slant and lots of texture. It is worked top down in joined rounds from a ribbed drawstring waistband, so the fit is easy to dial in as you go.

The pattern is wonderfully flexible, with mini, knee, and maxi lengths and both a solid and a lacy version to choose from. It is written for a sport weight cotton on a 4 mm hook, in a big size range from XS to 5X.

What You'll Need

A light cotton blend and a hook, sized to the length you choose.

  • Yarn A sport weight (category 2) cotton blend. The designer used Comfy Sport by WeCrochet. Yardage depends on your length, from about 430 yards for a mini up to nearly 1900 for a maxi.
  • Hook 4 mm (G). Matched to the sport weight yarn for a light fabric with good drape.
  • Drawstring A crocheted cord or ribbon. Threaded through the ribbed waistband to cinch and tie.
  • Extras Yarn needle and stitch markers. The wedge repeat is easier to track with a marker at the start of each round.

Tips Before You Start

A few things worth knowing that the pattern page does not always spell out.

1

Practice the wedge stitch on a swatch

The closed wedge stitch is the heart of this skirt. Work a small swatch first so the increases and decreases that shape each wedge feel familiar before you commit to a full round.

2

Pick your length before you start

Mini, knee, or maxi changes your yarn needs quite a bit. Decide up front and buy accordingly, since running out of a dye lot partway is no fun.

3

Try the solid version first

If you are new to the stitch, the solid version is more forgiving than the lace. You can always make the lacy one next once the rhythm clicks.

4

Add side splits for movement

The pattern includes an option to switch to rows for side splits. They make a longer version much easier to walk in and add a nice tailored detail.
