Crochet Flower Coaster

This free video tutorial from Elyse at ElyseCrochets is the coaster I reach for when someone wants a finished thing fast. It's a five petal flower with a sunny center, worked entirely in the round, and the best part is there's no magic ring. You start with a simple chain joined into a little circle, so it stays friendly even if magic rings still make you nervous.

It uses just worsted weight yarn and a 5mm hook in two colors, one for the center and one for the petals. It barely makes a dent in your stash, so it's a lovely scrap project, and most makers finish one in well under half an hour.

What You'll Need

The supply list is short, and you probably have all of it already.

  • Yarn Worsted weight (4) yarn in two colors. One color for the flower center and one for the petals. Acrylic or cotton both work, and you only need a small amount of each, which makes this a perfect scrap buster.
  • Hook 5mm (H-8). This pairs nicely with worsted weight here to give you a firm coaster that lies flat and holds its shape under a mug.
  • Scissors Any basic pair. You'll trim your yarn tail early on and again when you switch colors, so keep them handy.
  • Tapestry needle For weaving in ends. Because you change color partway through, you'll have a few tails to tuck neatly into the back when you're done.

Tips Before You Start

A few things worth knowing that make the first round go smoothly.

1

Cinch the center with the tail

This pattern uses a chain ring instead of a magic ring, which leaves a small hole in the middle. After round one, find the starting tail at the back and gently pull it to draw that hole closed. It's the same tidy result as a magic ring, just easier to make.

2

The starting chain doesn't count

At the start of each round you chain two, and that chain is not a stitch. It's the most common spot for beginners to lose count, so make your first real double crochet into the same place the pattern shows and don't work into the chain itself.

3

Count your stitches before you move on

Round one should give you 15 double crochets and round two should double that to 30. Pause and count at the end of each, because those numbers are what make the five petals come out evenly spaced later.

4

Pick cotton if it will hold real drinks

Acrylic is great for practice or decoration, but cotton handles moisture and machine washing far better. If these coasters are going under actual glasses, a cotton like a kitchen cotton will hold up to spills and washing much longer.

5

Give it a quick block to lie flat

If your finished coaster cups slightly or the petals curl, a light steam or a quick wet block will relax it flat. A coaster that sits perfectly flat keeps your mug steady, and it only takes a few minutes to set.
